Staff Attorney VOCA – Yakima, WA

NJP seeks applications from qualified attorneys to work to address the collateral civil legal needs of persons who have been victims of crime.  Such crimes include, but are not limited to, domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, and other violent acts, trafficking, wage theft, fraud, identity theft, and other financial exploitation.  The crime need not have been prosecuted or reported to law enforcement for the victim to receive civil legal services through NJP. The ideal candidate would be interested and willing to pursue civil litigation in areas related to housing, consumer protection, family law, public benefits and health care access, and other collateral impacts of victimization (such as protection orders, housing, employment, health care, and education).

The position will work as part of a larger team within NJP and will collaborate as part of a broader team of attorneys serving within the Washington Alliance for Equal Justice.  Applicants should have a desire to work with crime victims and with the agencies that serve them. The lawyer will identify, conduct outreach to, and collaborate closely with victim and other services agencies, law enforcement and others to identify and address the most pressing legal needs of crime victims in the region.   The lawyer will provide limited assistance, including advice and brief services at clinics, as well as representation in litigation, administrative procedures, and other legal matters as resources allow.  VOCA related work undertaken by the Yakima office has included family law litigation, litigating protection orders, housing litigation, and immigration relief.

Bilingual Staff Attorney – Quincy, WA

Northwest Justice Project (NJP) will receive funding from the Office of Civil Legal Aid (OCLA) to open an office to serve Grant and Adams County in our Quincy, WA office (about 30 miles from Wenatchee, WA) The funding will support the hiring of two attorneys and a legal assistant. The office will operate as a satellite of NJP’s Wenatchee office, which currently serves the region. 

This NJP office opening provides a historic and unique opportunity to serve the civil legal needs of low-income communities in an area of the state that has not benefitted from a dedicated legal aid office presence.

Bilingual Staff Attorney – Farmworker Unit (Yakima or Wenatchee)

The Northwest Justice Project (NJP) offers a unique opportunity to join a mission driven organization serving the legal needs of low-income people and communities in the Central region of Washington State.  The Farmworker Unit (FWU) is a statewide unit within NJP that provides legal assistance to low-income agricultural workers throughout Washington. This position may be located in either NJP’s Yakima or Wenatchee office. This is a full-time position.

NJP seeks applications from attorneys who have a strong interest in working with farmworker communities to address the collateral civil legal needs of farmworkers who have been victims of workplace crimes, including sexual violence, wage theft, fraud in labor contracting, and other financial exploitation.

City of Seattle - Deputy Hearing Examiner - Seattle, WA

The City of Seattle Office of Hearing Examiner is seeking a Deputy Hearing Examiner to conduct quasi-judicial hearings, and issue written decisions in cases assigned by the Hearing Examiner. The office is a small, separate and independent office of the City that conducts fair and impartial administrative hearings, authorized by Seattle Municipal Code, and is Seattle's forum for reviewing whether the law has been correctly applied in agency decisions. The office handles a wide range of case types, the majority of which are land use-related, but also include other case types that concern for example land-lord tenant issues, discrimination, labor standards, various citation appeals (e.g. Department of Transportation, Fire Department, etc.), and B & O Tax appeals. Hearing Examiner decisions can have a substantial impact on applicants and others concerned about or affected by City agency decisions and recommendations.

Immigration Project Resource Attorney Position Opening 

Looking for an exciting new advocacy opportunity? Washington Defender Association is looking for an experienced public defender or immigrant rights attorney to join our team. WDA is the voice of the public defense community throughout Washington. WDA provides defenders with direct support to ensure high quality legal representation, educates defenders and other institutional stakeholders and collaborates with communities to advocate for systemic change in the criminal legal system.

In 1999, WDA established our Immigration Project to defend and advance the rights of noncitizens accused of crimes. Since inception, we have consulted in over 25,000 cases to assist defenders to comply with their constitutional Padilla duties, participated in more than 300 trainings and collaborated with community and institutional partners to advance key systemic change on local regional and national levels. We’re looking for an experienced (4-7 years) public defender or immigrant rights attorney to join our team. We will provide you with training and support to build the immigration and/or criminal legal expertise necessary to be part of our team. You will work with our team to:

·       Provide case assistance and training to public defenders representing non-citizen clients;

·       Create criminal-immigration tools and resources to assist defenders in their cases; and

·       Engage with public defender offices across the state to develop strategies and policies that support and empower effective assistance of their clients and advance systemic change

The position is based in WDA’s Seattle office and requires some travel, primarily throughout Washington.
